Meet Our CEO, Russel Davies

Russel shares his valuable insights and experience in a recent Q&A...

> Name, job title and length of time working for RPHL

My name is Russel Davies, and I have been CEO at Ramco Pipetech Holdings Limited (RPHL) for the past one and a half years having worked at Ramco for nearly eight years.

> What is your background/career history prior to joining RPHL?

I graduated from Newcastle University in 1981 with a degree in Civil Engineering. As a Chartered Engineer, I worked for a Civil Engineering consultancy for three years in Lincolnshire before joining Shell in 1984 under its Graduate Field Engineer training scheme, where I worked both onshore and offshore for three years.

I then spent a further three years working for various contracting companies before joining Mobil North Sea, latterly ExxonMobil. From there I spent over 15 years in various onshore positions including a Pipeline Engineer and Inspection Supervisor, before moving offshore onto the Beryl Bravo platform as Maintenance Superintendent, Production Superintendent and finally OIM. In my final years at ExxonMobil I acted as Project Manager overseeing the Malory platform installation and the St Fergus plant upgrade. Fast forward to 2008 I joined Dominion Gas as Projects Director and then CEO, before joining Ramco in November 2017.

> What inspired you to establish/join RPHL?

Utilising expertise from my time at Ramco Tubular Services, the inception of RPHL created a future for the company, offering an opportunity to build on the positive aspects of the former business. This has enabled RPHL to now have four successful divisions, all providing leading OCTG pipe management and specialist cleaning services to the energy and industrial sectors. This restructure of the company was crucial for the success that RPHL is today, and it is inspiring to witness the company’s growth.

> What are you hoping to bring to the industry though RPHL?

At RPHL we safeguard the vital services we offer through our UK and Norwegian tubular companies and Pipetech operations. We are committed to delivering our first-class services to these markets while staying focused on achieving our growth objectives and securing long-term stability for our employees.

> Tell me about a recent project you have worked on, including any challenges encountered and solutions implemented?

The most significant project I have been involved in over the past two years has been the restructure of the Ramco group and the creation of RPHL, which has provided stability and a future for both our employees and stakeholders.

The other significant projects completed within the last 12 months has been the renewal of our Norwegian contracts with Equinor (nine years), Sumitomo (nine years) and Tenaris (four years). These contract renewals underpin our ability to continue operating throughout Norway.

> Can you give an insight into your working day at RPHL?

A typical working day for me consists of overseeing  all operations. This involves reviewing financial performance with my CFO and communicating critical information to our stakeholders whilst managing their expectations. I also often travel between our UK and Norwegian operations.

> What separates RPHL from existing operators in the market?

Our service offering is an integral part of the oil and gas supply chain and we always provide consistent top quartile results to our customers. Our expert team’s knowledge along with our advanced techniques and technologies is why we believe we are the leading OCTG service provider in the UK and Norway.

> What has been your top highlight at RPHL?

Witnessing the restructure and rebirth of the Ramco business, renewal of significant contracts in Norway, and seeing a growing profitability year on year, have been real highlights for me.
